Location, location, location. We’ve long heard that it’s the make-or-break factor from stores to gas stations to restaurants. For many photographers, it’s also the make-or-break for their portfolios. Landscape and nature photographers often value—and even become synonymous with—certain locations. Should we assume, then, that where we photograph is as important as what we photograph? Through sharing their personal perspectives and engaging in lively conversation, Sarah Marino and Beth Buelow will explore the role of place in our photography, with Sarah making the case for the benefits of a place-focused approach and Beth sharing the reasons behind her “location agnosticism” practice.They will touch on the advantages and drawbacks of emphasizing place, how location intersects with our creativity, how to be more deliberate about the role of place and location in your work,and how you can experience the landscape with openness and curiosity, no matter where you are.
