Defining “Abstract & Experimental”

For purposes of this Mastermind, abstract photography is imagery in which the object or scene being photographed is largely obscured and the creative message is about form, line, color, light, texture, etc. The photo’s intent is not to document or represent a scene (however artistically it may be done); it is to completely reinterpret a scene using compositional and/or non-traditional camera and creative processing techniques such as macro, minimalism, multiple exposure, intentional camera movement, freelensing, collage, cyanotype, combining photos with other art mediums (such as painting, gold leafing, encaustic, etc), and other alternative approaches. There also is room for non-literal imagery, in which the object or scene is recognizable but is mostly obscured in favor of emphasizing a reimagined presentation. Basic instruction and/or learning resources for various techniques will be provided based on group interest.

What the year looks like

Each month, you’ll connect via Zoom with a close-knit group of fellow photographers in live video sessions designed for real conversation and meaningful exchange. Together, you’ll learn from one another, share work, offer feedback, and engage in ongoing dialogue about your creative growth.

For every topic, there will be an Action Assignment Worksheet that includes skill-building and personal growth resources to watch, read, or listen to; reflection questions related to that month’s topic; and a photography exercise that gets you out and experimenting. You’ll bring your learning, questions, and images to each session for a facilitated group conversation.

  • Session 0 | A week or two before Session 1: program orientation meeting to review logistics, establish group agreements, and discuss the personal project

Meet Beth Buelow, your Mastermind Facilitator & Coach

Beth Buelow is a Michigan-based artist, coach, and educator specializing in abstract and minimalist photography. Beth's creative philosophy is simple: If you’re not amazed, you’re not paying attention. Her work doesn’t fit into one genre or subject, as she aims to reflect the incredible world around us. Inspired by Walt Whitman’s words, "I am large, I contain multitudes," Beth's photography explores themes of calm, order, mystery, balance, and experimentation. These elements may seem at odds, but they reflect her playful approach to creativity.

Her podcast, “Pixels,” features conversations with leading photographers, exploring the heart and art of photography. Beth is the author of “The Introvert Entrepreneur: Amplify Your Strengths and Create Success on Your Own Terms.”
She’s been coaching since 2008 and is a Professional Certified Coach, recognized by the International Coach Federation. She serves as Adjunct Faculty for George Mason University’s Leadership Coaching for Organizational Well-Being coach training program.
