There are an increasing number of photographers who are interested in challenging traditional photography and pushing the creative capacity of both their camera and themselves. If you’re one of those photographers, this program is designed for you!

The Abstract & Experimental Photography Mastermind Group is a 12-month program designed specifically for the exploration of non-traditional photography. Our focus is supporting you in creating, playing, processing, curating, and presenting your abstract images in a way that reflects your individual voice. We’ll learn about and practice techniques such as Intentional Camera Movement, multiple exposures (in-camera and created in Photoshop), cyanotypes, collage, and combining different art mediums with photography, along with alternative approaches brought by mastermind members.*

Time also will be dedicated to learning about the art of abstraction and its opportunities, challenges, and value as a form of self-expression. Learning will be put into action through Participants will design a personal photography project to work on throughout the program. Time for image sharing, brainstorming, coaching, and feedback is integrated into monthly group sessions.

Those are the “outer game” aspects that will culminate in a final project sharing celebration at the conclusion of the program. In addition, we’ll emphasize the “inner game” that’s essential for all artists: building confidence, clarifying your vision, working through obstacles, handling the inner critic, and cultivating an expansive, playful mindset.

(* Our focus is on camera-based and photographic processes. We will not be exploring AI programs, platforms, or tools, except for editing tools in Lightroom and Photoshop that assist with fine-tuning and bring efficiencies to image processing.)

Why the Mastermind Group?

The abstract path can be lonely. It’s not always understood or embraced in traditional photography-sharing outlets and communities. Through the Mastermind experience, you’ll benefit from being part of a small, supportive community that values alternative expression as much as you do. Every month, you and your colleagues will engage with one another to share your work and discuss the development of your voice as a photographer. The space will be one of encouragement, challenge, and learning. There are no experts, only artists interested in lifting one another up and deepening their skills and creative practices.

Purpose

To learn and utilize alternative photography techniques as a primary means of self-expression, build your confidence, clarify your vision and motivations, provide tools for personal/creative resilience, and facilitate overall artistic growth.

Who it’s for:

Any photographer seriously interested in or already working with abstract and experimental photography methods. You’re looking to up-level and/or professionalize your creative output and are looking for a supportive space for honest sharing, feedback, and risk taking.

Defining “Abstract & Experimental”

For purposes of this Mastermind, abstract photography is imagery in which the object or scene being photographed is largely obscured and the creative message is about form, line, color, light, texture, etc. The photo’s intent is not to document or represent a scene (however artistically it may be done); it is to completely reinterpret a scene using compositional and/or non-traditional camera and creative processing techniques such as macro, minimalism, multiple exposure, intentional camera movement, freelensing, collage, cyanotype, combining photos with other art mediums (such as painting, gold leafing, encaustic, etc), and other alternative approaches. There also is room for non-literal imagery, in which the object or scene is recognizable but is mostly obscured in favor of emphasizing a reimagined presentation. Basic instruction and/or learning resources for various techniques will be provided based on group interest.

What the year looks like

Each month, you’ll connect via Zoom with a close-knit group of fellow photographers in live video sessions designed for real conversation and meaningful exchange. Together, you’ll learn from one another, share work, offer feedback, and engage in ongoing dialogue about your creative growth.

For every topic, there will be an Action Assignment Worksheet that includes skill-building and personal growth resources to watch, read, or listen to; reflection questions related to that month’s topic; and a photography exercise that gets you out and experimenting. You’ll bring your learning, questions, and images to each session for a facilitated group conversation.

Meet Beth Buelow, your Mastermind Facilitator & Coach

Beth Buelow is a Michigan-based artist, coach, and educator specializing in abstract and minimalist photography. Beth's creative philosophy is simple: If you’re not amazed, you’re not paying attention. Her work doesn’t fit into one genre or subject, as she aims to reflect the incredible world around us. Inspired by Walt Whitman’s words, "I am large, I contain multitudes," Beth's photography explores themes of calm, order, mystery, balance, and experimentation. These elements may seem at odds, but they reflect her playful approach to creativity.

Her podcast, “Pixels,” features conversations with leading photographers, exploring the heart and art of photography. Beth is the author of “The Introvert Entrepreneur: Amplify Your Strengths and Create Success on Your Own Terms.”
She’s been coaching since 2008 and is a Professional Certified Coach, recognized by the International Coach Federation. She serves as Adjunct Faculty for George Mason University’s Leadership Coaching for Organizational Well-Being coach training program.
